The Southeaster Counselor Training Institute is excited to announce the first of a series of specialty continuing education seminars for 2023. This special topics series will focus on exploring themes that relate specifically to the healing power of the therapeutic relationship post Carl Rogers and the humanistic tradition. Contemporary research grounded in attachment theory and neuroscience are expanding our understanding of how people change in exciting and challenging ways. If you want an opportunity to think outside of the box from traditional approaches to change, come join us for a taste of relational/experiential therapy.

The Transformation of Suffering: An Introduction to Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

Our first lecture, The Transformation of Suffering-An Introduction to Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy presented by Dr. Karen Tantillo, reflects the integration of the head and the heart in the therapeutic process. Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) is a healing oriented, attachment-based and experiential mind-body psychotherapy that is effective in addressing relational and attachment trauma, engendering resilience, and enhancing a sense of well-being and flourishing (Iwakabe et al, 2022). AEDP translates current neuroscience into moment-to-moment clinical practice that can lead to transformational change. In this workshop, the conceptual framework of AEDP’s healing oriented transformational model will be shared along with excerpts of clinical videotape that demonstrate specific AEDP strategies and interventions.  An opportunity to practice aspects of AEDP, ask questions and reflect on learning will be provided.   By the end of the training, participants will:

  1. Identify 3 components of the theoretical model underpinning AEDP practice

  1. Identify at least four key clinical concepts of the model and the therapeutic stance of AEDP

  1. Explore the phenomenology of the 4 States and 3 State Transformations of AEDP

  1. Practice aspects of AEDP in a structured experiential exercise with opportunity for reflection and “meta-therapeutic processing
